Location
Lands End is located at the far northwest corner of the city, between Lincoln Park (home to the Legion of Honor) and the Pacific Ocean. The trail is part of the larger California Coastal Trail, known as the Coastal Trail. While hiking through Lands End, you can also see the Lands End Labyrinth- on a rocky terrace below the Coastal Trail near Eagle’s Point.
Why It’s Special
Known for breathtaking cliffside ocean views and the ruins of Sutro Baths, Lands End was named after the sea lions once spotted offshore (“lobos marinos”).
The labyrinth, created in 2004 by local artist Eduardo Aguilera as a seven-loop spiral, is often seen as a peaceful place meant to inspire love and calm. It has been frequently rebuilt after vandalism.
What To Expect
Easy-to-moderate trails with viewpoints of the Golden Gate Bridge, USS San Francisco memorial, and hidden Cove beaches. It’s an approximately 3.5-mile loop popular for sunset walks.
Reaching the labyrinth requires hiking down unmaintained cliffside trails- wear sturdy shoes and be cautious, as it’s usually windy and some spots can be slippery.
Accessibility & Logistics
The trail is wheelchair‑accessible from Merrie Way to the overlook only; beyond that it becomes rocky. The visitor center has restrooms and a café. Parking is free but break-ins are reported often, so transit is safer.
BONUS:
If you want to make the most of your day, head to the top of Lincoln Park. There you will find the Legion of Honor- a neoclassical art museum modeled after a Parisian pavilion. Inside, it showcases European art, while outside there is a Holocaust memorial on the plaza.
