You’ve made it to my favorite spot in San Francisco!
Back in 2018, this small park was barely known by anyone I talked to when I first discovered it. I used to live just three blocks away, and almost every time I visited, I had the place all to myself.
For me, Ina Coolbrith Park has always been more than just a park. It’s a place where I’ve celebrated wins, reflected on challenges, thought about life’s next steps, cried, or simply sat and admired the insanely beautiful view. It’s incredibly sentimental to me and I love bringing friends here when they visit San Francisco.
Today, the park is a bit more popular, but it’s still peaceful and perfect for watching a sunset. My favorite ritual is to arrive before sunset, watch the colors fade, and stay as the city lights up at night.
If you already knew about this hidden gem- lucky you! You’ve checked off my favorite San Francisco spot. If you’re just discovering it, I’m thrilled to share it with you. And I don’t just hope you’ll love it- I know you will.
Location
Ina Coolbrith Park is located on top of a hill in the Russian Hill neighborhood. You can reach it from Vallejo Street through a steep walk and stairs, or from the top at Taylor Street.
Why It’s Special
The park offers one of the best elevated views of the San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and the city skyline. Named after California’s first poet laureate, Ina Coolbrith, it’s a peaceful escape hidden into a residential area, most of the time totally skipped by tourists.
What To Expect
You can enjoy a quiet walk along the small paths, take in the city and water views from benches, and snap memorable photos. It’s a great spot to rest after exploring North Beach- and getting up there is a bit of a workout, so that’s a bonus!
Accessibility & Logistics
The park may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. There’s no formal parking, so it’s easiest to reach on foot.
