Cataract Falls is located on the western side of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, about an hour north of San Francisco. The trailhead starts near Alpine Lake, a quiet reservoir surrounded by forest. Know Before You Go To Cataract Falls
The trail can get steep and slippery in places, especially after rain-wear sturdy shoes. Parking is limited near the trailhead, so arrive early. Dogs are allowed on leash, and the hike is about 2.5 miles round trip to the main falls. Go during or just after the rainy season for the best water flow and fewer crowds.
