It’s peaceful and uncrowded, with fewer shops but plenty of natural beauty. Capitola, located just south of Santa Cruz, is a colorful beach town known for its lively Esplanade and bright Venetian-style buildings. Shops, cafes, and ocean views make it a perfect spot for a chilled day by the water. Both towns Davenport and Capitola are great stops along Highway 1, whether you’re looking for a scenic view or a beachside lunch.
History of Davenport and Capitola
Davenport was once a center for limestone mining and cement production in the early 1900s. It grew around the Davenport Cement Plant, which operated for nearly a century before closing in 2010. Despite its size, it played a role in shaping early coastal industry in the region.
Capitola is considered one of California’s oldest beach resorts, with people coming there for seaside vacations since the 1860s. It was originally known as Camp Capitola, attracting visitors who stayed in tents and cabins along the shore. Over the years, it grew into a more developed resort town with a strong local arts scene and community events. Today, its charm still attracts both locals and tourists.

Know Before You Go To Davenport and Capitola
There’s limited cell service in Davenport and just a handful of businesses, including a bakery and cafe, so plan ahead. Davenport Beach is beautiful but has strong surf- better for photography and walking than swimming. Bring layers, as the coastal wind can be strong even in summer. Look for the popular swing at Davenport Pier but note it may not always be there depending on weather and maintenance. Heading down to the beach can be steep and uneven, so it might not be for everyone- if you’re wearing the wrong shoes or feel unsure, it’s totally okay to skip it and just enjoy the view from above.
Parking in Capitola can be tricky on weekends, so arrive early or use nearby lots. There are plenty of places to eat and shop along the Esplanade. Don’t miss a walk across the Capitola Wharf for sunset views.
